Exploring Malaysia’s Food and Culture

Malaysia is a melting pot of different cultures, races, and religions. Not only is the country home to native Malays, but also to Indians, Chinese, and many other ethnic groups. This is perhaps why Malaysia is often called a “gastronomical paradise” and has a reputation for colorful and lively festivals. With so many different cultures living in peace and mixing together, you can:

• Enjoy a hearty South Indian meal of rice, papadum, and an assortment of vegetables and sides on banana leaves
• Savor a Nasi Dagang lunch spread with coconut steamed rice, fish curry, vegetable pickles, and fried shaved coconut
• Sip on some savory Bakuteh, which literally means “meat bone tea” and is made up of meat ribs in a broth of mixed herbs and spices and lots more

And these are just a few of the more notable gastronomical treats waiting for you in Malaysia. You can enjoy a foodie adventure at the finest restaurants in Malaysia or enjoy an authentic street food experience at Jalan Alor. And afterwards, you can witness an explosion of cultures in the Central Market of Chinatown and the Little India of Kuala Lumpur.

Basic Travel Info for Malaysia

To make sure you’re well-prepared for your trip to Malaysia, you can refer to the following basic travel info:

• Average Temperature – Temperatures in Malaysia are often towards the pleasant side. In Kuala Lumpur, the hottest month is March, during which you’ll experience an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius or 82 degrees Fahrenheit. As for the cooler months, January is the coldest month, during which the average temperature is at 27 degrees Celsius or 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Malaysia also experiences rainfall the most during the month of November. During this season, the average rainfall is at about 290mm.
• Currency – Malaysia uses the Ringgit in terms of currency. One American dollar (USD) is equal to approximately 4.7 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). And one British pound (GBP) is equal to approximately 5.3 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). On the other hand, you can exchange 1 Euro for around 5.8 MYR.
• Visa Requirements – In order to enter Malaysia, you need to have a valid passport or valid travel documents that are internationally recognized. Please get updated information from https://www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/visa/visa-requirement-by-country
• Getting Around – Malaysian cities have excellent transportation facilities, making it easier for tourists to get around. Public transportation can get you from Kuala Lumpur to other Malaysian cities. If you’re staying close to the city center, you can easily reach various attractions on foot. You can travel by the Kuala Lumpur train ( to travel between north and south or east and west. This mode of transportation offers you the most mobility and is quite inexpensive.

As for the locations you can’t reach by train, you can also opt to travel by buses or taxis. Buses can get you to where you need to go with minimal cost. Taxis are a bit more expensive than other modes of transportation but they offer the most flexibility. You can easily find a taxi for hire at every corner. Or “GRAB” services.

However, if you need even more flexibility than taxis you can always hire a car. There are several car rental companies around the city. And you can even choose this option if you wish to travel outside of Kuala Lumpur to other cities.

Domestic flights are available in almost every city/state and the country is lined with excellent highways if you choose to self-drive (from North to South and from East to West)

Getting into Malaysia

Malaysia is a major hub for tourism in this region  and for flights from other regions .

You can choose to enter via flights, land (drive/train/public buses from Singapore/Thailand) or by sea.

Flights are plenty from low-cost flights (Airasia) or most major Airlines do cover Kuala Lumpur (KLIA International Airport)
